The Music of the Ainur

Before the world was made, there was music. In the beginning of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, Ilúvatar calls forth the Ainur — the holy ones — and from their voices, the universe itself is sung into existence. It is one of the most awe-inspiring creation myths in all of literature, and it is the inspiration for this ambitious work for Grade 5 wind ensemble.

The Music of the Ainur, composed by Stephen Troy, is a sweeping 12-minute musical interpretation of those opening pages — from the first great theme to the discord of Melkor, and the ultimate unfolding of Eä, the world that is. The work challenges advanced ensembles to explore rich harmonic language, dramatic contrasts, and sustained lyrical passages that demand both technical precision and deep musical sensitivity.
