Originally published in 1594 in Thomas Morley’s The First Booke of Madrigals, this brief yet brilliantly expressive work adapts an Italian text into a vivid, playful weather metaphor detailing the mood swings of courtly love.
The piece opens with bright, soaring polyphonic lines celebrating the warmth of spring and summer, only to pivot to elongated, brooding harmonies as the narrative turns to the chill of autumn and winter.
Arranger Travis Freshner preserves every ounce of Morley's madrigalian charm, translating the original four-part vocal polyphony into an exquisite showpiece for brass quartet.
