At least 137 people lost their lives in the flood, and at least two more are still missing. Since Central Texas is where I was born (in Travis County, where 9 people lost their lives), I chose to write this piece in their honor. You will hear two main themes in this work. The first, the \"Central Texas\" theme, is played at the very beginning by a solo trumpet, then answered in \"Taps\"-fashion by a solo Euphonium. The second theme, which I call the \"Come to Me\" theme, is introduced by the entire Horn section at fff volume, just before the middle of the work. These two themes come together in the latter third of the piece, after the devastation of the middle third. I ended the work with a dissonant pair of soft, high-pitched notes, representing two souls still lost after all this time. This setting is playable by middle school bands and can be played with limited instrumentation. 2nd clarinet parts remain below the break and 2nd trumpet parts stay in a manageable range. It provides the opportunity to both teach expressive playing and introduce the idea of chromaticism to students.
